How I Love Thee, Summer Blockbusters!

June 28th, 2013

Today we’re re-running one of our favorites from the archive. This “Tootzypop Classic” originally ran on July 3, 2012. What blockbusters will you see this summer?

I spend every spring anticipating the start of “The Season.”

Like most of you, I grew up seeing summer blockbusters. My childhood memories are filled with the smell of a movie theater in summer, that wonderful mixture of chlorine, suntan lotion, butter, and adventure. I love movies, and I especially love summer movies! I like my “films” in winter: you know, those ever-so-important cerebral indie or foreign dramas that make you huddle down in your seat, deep in morose. But Summer? Summer is for fun! Awe me with spectacular visuals, special effects, movie stars, and fantasy.

This summer, the box office is so delicious that I’m tripping over my flip-flops rushing to opening weekend EVERY weekend! These are my favorites for those of you who love summer blockbusters as much as I do.

Prometheus, directed by my favorite, Ridley Scott. The movie is the prequel to the sci-fi legend, Alien. It’s got it all: incredible special effects, scary aliens, mythology, gorgeous cast, beautiful sets, and cinematography that is jaw-dropping. Plus, the story line of the film is man’s continual quest for the origin of mankind. A must see for the season!

My next favorite so far this summer is Snow White And The Huntsman. Charlize Theron happens to star in both this film and Prometheus. She does not disappoint in either. This film plays on the typical fairy tale good-versus-evil theme, but with incredible sets and Colleen Atwood-designed costumes on Snow White as a warrior battling the evil queen (Charlize Theron). It doesn’t hurt to watch gorgeous men running around in medieval costumes.

What’s next on my summer blockbuster dance card? Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Ted, The Amazing Spider-Man and Savages. Now pass me the Good & Plenty!

Find the kid in you and lose yourself in the magic of the movies this summer! While you’re there, eat all the junk food you want.

Yes, a great childhood tradition of going to the movies. Last week I had a sprained foot so couldn’t hobble over to the movie theater. Instead I watched a classic at home – TITANIC – and it was so much fun to watch! Just needed some (non)buttered popcorn…(or even better, Junior Mints).

Pamea, have you seen Poseidon Adventure lately? Watched it last week for a great reminder of the inspiration for all modern disaster movies. Great cast too!
