The Tootzypop 2012 Holiday Gift Guide runs from Black Friday, November 23, through Friday, December 7.

These are some of my most favorite things about my least favorite holiday season.

  • Stores open crazy late! As an avowed night owl, I love being able to go to Target at 11:30 on a Tuesday night, no crowds and plenty of parking to boot.
  • Holiday plaid. Now is  the best time of the year to stock up on wacky plaids of every color combination. If you like to sew, it’s boon time!
  • Fresh Chestnuts. Some foods only taste good in their proper season, and fresh roasted chestnuts are one of them. They are easy to cook in your toaster oven, and delicious!
  • Pretty sparkly holiday lights. I know it’s not my holiday (I’m Jewish), but I can look, can’t I? My kids and I love to drive around neighborhoods with the most elaborate displays, hot cocoa in hand and oohing and ahhing at everyone’s hard work.
  • Introducing my children to crooners past! Every year my children get better and better at distinguishing between Harry Belafonte and Johnny Mathis, Perry Como and Andy Williams, Bing Crosby and all the rest.
  • White chocolate everywhere! Yes, you can find it year round, but at Christmas it shows up as hot chocolate, covered in peppermint, and even M&M’s.
  • Marzipan! This one gets its own shout out. For marzipan lovers like me, it’s the one time of year to stock up on the goods. World Market usually carries no less than five varieties. Don’t worry about the crowds — they’ll be open till 11:00!
  • Sparkly, shiny shoes. I don’t know why people don’t like to wear these all year ’round, but I sure do! Get in line behind me.
  • Ugly sweater parties. You haven’t really experienced Christmas excess until you attend a party in full knitted, appliquéd regalia!
  • Rankin & Bass. ‘Nuff said.

Try to make the most of what, for some, can be a very unhappy, lonely time of year. Reaching out to friends in need, or helping out those less fortunate can raise one’s own spirits as well.
