Since my son was born five years ago, weight gain plus the body changes that come with being 40-something have made it tough for me to find the right clothes. But one thing I’ve finally figured out after all these years is the power of carrying a great purse. Doesn’t matter how old you are, doesn’t matter if you are light years away from having a body like Giselle… the right bag will always make you look better.
I used to carry cheap purses and they’d fall apart after less than a year. But last year I took a big gulp and dropped almost $300 on the Dooney & Burke bag in this picture. The sticker shock just about killed me (though I’ve learned since then that you can spend a whole lot more than $300 on a high quality bag), but it was worth every penny. This thing is solid — the thick leather and sturdy seams and rivets mean I’ll carry it for years. And I get compliments every time I go out with it.
Once I was bitten by the bag bug I had to buy another. I found this Michael Kors at Nordstrom’s Rack ($160! A bargain!). I won’t have this bag for life the way I will the Dooney, but I still get tons of compliments. And because it’s a little trendier, I get to feel fashionable even if the most stylish clothing I’m wearing is clogs and jeans.
Now I’m lusting after this Marc Jacobs satchel. It’s bright blue, roomy, and easy to carry, the perfect summer bag. It’s more than I’ve ever spent on a bag, but I figure I’ve reached the point in my life where I can splurge on the things that make me feel good.
