The Tootzypop “12 Days of Christmas Holiday & Gift Guide” runs from Black Friday through Monday, December 12.

Merry Christmas! According to the 2011-2012 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet. Most of those pet owners will spend on average $46 this year to put Christmas gifts under the tree for their loyal companions. With 43% of Gen X women childless today, our pets are the heartbeat of our lives. And as much as I love to spoil my own dog, James W, all year round, I don’t think I’ll be participating in this year’s crazy, over-the-top Christmas gifts for my gorgeous beast. Instead, I plan to donate to the less fortunate animals out there without homes, a warm bed, or even the opportunity to live. With local budget cuts being implemented on animal service departments across the country, we owe our four-legged buddies some good ole’ fashioned Christmas generosity and love. Christmas is about helping the less fortunate — and in this horrible economy, their needs are urgent.

So give a poor soul a new leash on life this holiday season! You can donate to the American Humane Society, your local Animal Services Department (“The Pound”), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), or to various local nonprofit rescue organizations. You can even foster a pet! If you don’t have the cash this year, you can still give by donating some of your own pet’s luxuries, such as dog beds, blankets, toys, leashes, and food.

Animals offer the most generous of Christmas gifts: loyalty, friendship, unconditional love. And what would be the ultimate gift for yourself, your family, or a lonely friend this year? Why, a loving, appreciative, furry new friend!

Peace and goodwill to all beasts.

Shop for Christmas gifts and cards that will change an animal’s life. Buy from the ASPCA online store and the American Humane Society Holiday Card online store. Who doesn’t love a cute puppy card for Christmas, a great T-shirt, chew toy, or coffee mug?
