Tootzypop Classics: We’re saying goodbye to 2012 and ushering in 2013 with a celebration of some of the year’s most read posts. This post originally ran on August 13, 2012. We’ll be back with new, original posts on Monday, January 7. Enjoy!
My single girlfriends tell me about their dating adventures and I guess I’m not surprised that, often, their dates don’t pick up the tab. I consider my friends (and myself) modern women — I think it’s perfectly acceptable for a woman to pay the check every now and again. But here’s a news flash for men: Deep down, many of us still want a little old-fashioned romance. Of course a woman can be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company — but when it comes to amore, she probably also wants to feel beautiful and be treated like, well… a lady.
It must be incredibly confusing for a man to guess what a liberated woman expects from him on a date in the 21st century, but the next time you guys whip out the calculator to figure out her portion of the dinner bill think about the investment that a woman makes before your date even begins by…
• Maintaining The Mane: $35-$200 for a blowout and/or color
• Keeping Things Smooth: $35 for a bikini wax (can you put a price on pain?)
• Staying Un-pregnant: prices vary depending on health insurance coverage for birth control
• Abolishing Chipped Nails & Calluses: $30 (not including tip) for a mani-pedi
• Supporting The Foundation: $50 and up for a nice bra
• Making more Calluses: $100 for some hot shoes
You don’t need to be a math wiz to figure out that a woman’s up front cost for a date is considerably more than a man’s. Add it all up and, depending on the circumstances (i.e. how much she’s into you), women can easily spend $30-$400 on one date. She has already put the time, money, and effort into your big night out. Surely that’s worth the price of a meal, right guys?

A simple dating rule of thumb would be if the man asks you out it’s up to him to pick up the check. You can always offer to pay for the movie and popcorn. If you know that your date is into going dutch, cut back on the pre-date maintenance costs and keep your bottom line in the black.
