The Tootzypop “12 Days of Christmas Holiday & Gift Guide” runs from Black Friday through Monday, December 12.

In these not-so-opulent times, I’ve penned a new a motto for myself regarding holiday gifting:

“Make it yourself. Or, if you can’t make it yourself, find someone else who can!”

For the first half of my motto, there is a definite catch. I’m fairly crafty, but I’m not the most organized person on the planet. I usually don’t plan far enough ahead to make presents and, as a result, I spend too much money in a last minute panic at the mall. As we all know, shopping at the mall a week before Christmas has the pleasure equivalent of having someone stick needles into your eyes. In order to avoid this particular torture, I promised myself that I’d make a few homemade items for the people on my list that can appreciate my limited gift-making skills (my sea salt body scrub went over pretty well last year) and purchase unique gifts from artists and designers for those who may have skin allergies. The last thing I want to do is give my loved ones a rash.

For the second half of my motto, I have Etsy (cue choir of angels). Etsy is a haven for the handmade, and it’s downright fun to surf around and find the perfect you-never-knew-it-even-existed affordable gift. It’s been inspiring to see the DIY movement grow and flourish over the last decade. I love when talented people are able to sell their work outside of the soul-crushing venues of mass consumption. Yeah, I’m talking about you, Macy’s.

If you like your shopping experience to go beyond the virtual, and you live in Los Angeles, go to the Unique LA design show. Not only is it loads of fun perusing the handiwork of hundreds of creative souls, you just might find that perfect gift for the person who has everything.

Check out these two shops on Etsy: Hello Pearlyn has limited edition prints (I got a super cute print for my baby niece’s bedroom wall last year for a mere $15) and GoGoSnap for vintage-inspired holiday cards – they have an adorable art deco flapper calendar for $11.
